Regardless of whether you are a legitimate indie label or a kid just making hot trax in the basement and then selling CDs in front of your local Wal-Mart, the bottom line is, you have to “get your music out there!” And in Urban music, especially in Hip Hop & Rap, artists, producers, djs and independent companies will more than likely have to take it to the street, or go “underground’ in the early
stages of releasing and promoting their music. So if you have put together your best material, and have it produced, mixed well, and hopefully made it presentable in the packaging, artwork, and even mastered, I say, “go for it!” Get it out there, and try to get that “buzz” every artist or company needs, to get to that next level of success... regardless of some of the specifics involved.
Specifics? The details of whether or not you are set up as an official label entity, barcodes, etc, etc. For the most part, you need to get your music on a CD and start to get it distributed out into the public to create a buzz. And for the record: I am by no means saying not to do all the correct and legal, as far as your business set-up procedures. But, I am saying be proactive, and get your music on a CD, and then take it to the street! Do it either as a promotional and marketing tool, or even to sell “your personal copies”, if someone wants to buy it. The bottom line is that you need to have something to hand someone; a copy of what you do; your music, that’s in a “fixed” and tangible form... a CD.
There are countless number of guys putting out CDs; compilations, single releases, mixtapes, or just having their CD ready to sell at their live shows. And any of this can be done fairly simple, as long as you got product. But I do suggest that if you are going to have something that is going to represent you or your company, then make sure that you at least have a few things very tight and put together with a enough effort to help give yourself the opportunity for a positive response and/or reward from your CD drop and presentation to the world...
