RELATIONSHIPS IN THE MUSIC BUSINESS

Yes, relationships politically dominate the music business. In other words, business with one person will mean more than business with another person. Let’s just tell it like it is; If you’re doing a deal with somebody, and you’re first stating out, your key guy or whatever may value their relationship with the person they have already been doing business with, before you; the new guy. This is because they’ve already been doing business longstanding with the other guy...and a whole lot longer too. For example: When I first started out, it was like, “Well, who are you Manuel?” That’s because, if you are the new man, you may do something, but then, you may not...do something. So that allegiance may be with the person that’s already “in”. And you will have to keep all of this in mind, and you keep all of that in focus when you are going after what you must get! So what’s the thing to do? “Atmosphere and Attitude.” Like the saying goes, “Being forewarned is to know.” So it’s good to get all of this knowledge, and all of the things that are being mentioned...and then some, so that we’re forever learning. And you also have to think about the economics in the music business. And most of us don’t understand this, but it is, “Music... Business!” So you have to find out “how” everything works. If you look at rebates; most companies are banking on you to “not” fill that rebate out... to get your money back!” They are banking on you “not to know” what’s going on or how it works. You always pay for what you don’t know...
